The Literacy Network
The Literacy Network is comprised of over 20 literacy programs that provide free literacy assistance to adults, families and children in San Diego County. Last fiscal year (2007-2008) the Literacy Network served 117,980 total learners (71,026 children and 46,954 adults).
The San Diego Council on Literacy supports the Literacy Network by:
- Heightening the awareness of the literacy problem in the community and finding solutions
- Providing resources for Literacy Network programs
- Placing Literacy*AmeriCorps members in Literacy Network programs to support instruction
- Referring volunteer tutors and learners to Literacy Network programs through a countywide referral service
- Underwriting vision care for low income learners
- Sponsoring the READ/San Diego Tutor Conference
- Donating children's books
- Supporting life skills training of adult learners either onsite at individual literacy programs or at regional locations around the County.
